Frequently Asked Question: "What if my camper is not a strong swimmer?"
Answer: "You chose the right day camp! We have safety policies in place for you."
At Famous Adventures, safety is our top priority—especially when it comes to water activities. As the only day camp in Charleston adhering to the American Camp Association (ACA), we have the highest standards for camper safety and enjoyment. Our water-based adventures are thoughtfully designed to ensure that every camper has a fun and secure experience.
Beach Day: Fun with Safety in Mind
Our beach days are a highlight of the summer, and we take extra precautions to keep them safe and enjoyable. We set up at the lifeguard stands and engage campers in games within safe water depths—knee to waist level—depending on the campers' age, weather conditions, and tides. Often, we find tide pools to play in instead of venturing into the open ocean. With a ratio of two staff members to thirteen campers, a staff member is always within reach of a camper in the water. This approach allows campers to have a fun day without taking unnecessary risks.
Boat Tours: Life Jackets and Tide Pools
Our dolphin tours with Charleston Outdoor Adventures offer campers a chance to get out on the water, and to explore Morris Island. All campers wear U.S. Coast Guard-approved personal flotation devices (PFDs), even while exploring the beach. We do not allow campers to enter the water unless there is a safe tide pool to play in. The inlet between Morris Island and Folly Beach is not open for swimming. Instead, we spot dolphins, collect shells, and learn about this unique ecosystem.
Water Parks: Supervised Splashing
Water park days are a camper and staff favorite, and we partner with Charleston County Parks and Recreation Commission (CCPRC) to ensure a safe environment. CCPRC staffs plenty of lifeguards, and we add an extra layer of supervision by having two Famous Adventures groups attend together, providing four staff members for twenty-six kids. We keep a close eye on campers throughout the day and choose age-appropriate parks like Splash Island, Splash Zone, and Whirlin' Waters.
Sun Safety: Staying Cool and Protected
In Charleston's summer sun, staying sun-safe is just as important as water safety. We re-apply sunscreen every 30 to 60 minutes, encourage campers to drink lots of water, and take regular breaks in the shade throughout the day. Our staff keeps a close watch to ensure every camper is protected, hydrated, and feeling their best.
