Spend a Day with Camp: At the Beach!

We feel so lucky to live where others vacation! Our campers get to experience the fun and beauty of Lowcountry beaches all summer long. From building sandcastles to splashing in the waves, here’s a peek into what a beach day looks like with camp!

Morning Kickoff: Sunscreen and Safety First

We head to the beach first thing in the morning to make the most of the cooler hours and open beach space! After setting up our camp close to the lifeguard stand and going over safety rules with campers, everybody gets a first round of sunscreen (we re-apply often) and a snack to start the day ready for sunny fun. 

Free Play, Beach Style:

When we arrive, we establish a “play zone” for campers with clear boundaries of where we go, and defined zones for any kind of beach experience they want. Stretches of free-choice play time is core to camp, and we believe, to meaningful outdoor experiences for kids! Campers are always in sight of staff, and we run frequent headcounts. Some beach day camper favorites include:

• Hunting for shells and shark teeth at the tideline

• Digging giant holes (and burying one another within them)

• Practicing gymnastics routines 

• Building epic drip castles

• Tossing around a soccer ball or frisbee

• Playing camp games

Water Play, the Safe Way:

Splashing and cooling off in the water is one of the best parts of our beach days! When the lifeguards are on their stand, campers can head into the water alongside an instructor, who stays within reach. We play and splash as a group in knee to waist level water—depending on the campers' age, weather conditions, and tides. Often, we find amazing tide pools to play in instead of venturing into the open ocean. Some of our favorite water games are jumping over waves, body surfing in to shore, sharks and minnows, tag, dunking under and seeing our wild hair when coming up, and of course, playing mermaids! 

We Love the Beach!

Beach days are truly one of the highlights of our summer—there’s just something magical about sun, sand, and splashing in the waves with friends, that is what summer break is all about! Whether they’re trying to dig the deepest hole, floating in the shallows, or just chatting and snacking with friends under the umbrella, campers leave the beach smiling, sandy, and full of stories to tell.
