Our staff:camper ratio is 2 staff to 13 campers
We're all adults here! There is one trip leader (21+) and one assistant (18+) in each group
Each staff also has:
Wilderness First Aid (WFA) certification for all Trip Leaders
Experience specifically working with children in the outdoors (see bios below!)
Darkness to Light training required for all staff
Van driver training and DMV background check
COVID-19 vaccination is required for all staff
Meet Our 2022 Staff:
Aaron is a full-time Latin teacher at Porter-Gaud, and 5th-year Famous Adventures staff. Aaron has an MA in Romance Languages from the University of Georgia. He enjoys all things overly-cerebral, including speaking in dead languages and playing complicated board games. Aaron has also participated in Outward Bound North Carolina and Hurricane Island, and is an avid whitewater rafter, mountain biker, and world-traveler. He has training in WFA, CPR, and Darkness to Light.
Alexis graduated from Clemson University with a degree in Biological Sciences and a minor in Wildlife Biology. She loves to teach about all types of animals and anything science related. Alexis also enjoys all kinds of outdoor activities including zip lining, hiking, scuba diving, but her favorite activity she has done is free diving with sharks! She has training in WFA, CPR, and Darkness to Light. This will be Alexis's second summer with Famous Adventures
Allison is a camp and outdoor enthusiast, returning for her third summer with Famous Adventures! Allison also leads our Girls Outdoors Program during the school year. She has a degree in Family and Child Sciences from FL State University, and holds WFA, CPR and Darkness to Light Certification. She has years of experience working with kids as a teacher, camp counselor, and challenge course facilitator, and she is passionate about learning through play in the outdoors. Her talents include hula hooping while walking backwards and Harry Potter trivia.
Amelia is a James Island Charter High School graduate and just finished her freshman year as a student-athlete at Seton Hall University in New Jersey. As an environmental studies major, she loves the outdoors and spending time in nature. She has been babysitting and nannying for years and loves working and being with kids. Things she likes to do include painting, running, dancing, and playing hackysack (even though she isn’t that great it’s still fun). This will be Amelia's first summer with Famous Adventures!
Carter will be returning for his second year as a trip leader at Famous Adventures. Carter received a B.A. in secondary education and history from the College of Charleston, and is currently a certified full-time 7th grade geography teacher for Berkeley County School District. He has a combined 8 years of experience working with children and young adults as a summer camp counselor, nanny, swim instructor, and school teacher. Carter enjoys spending time outdoors, learning new things, and training his 1 year old Australian Shepherd named Bowie.
CJ Anderson is a full time dance educator at College Park Middle, with a bachelors in Dance Education and Communication Studies. She also just completed her MFA in dance at Texas Woman’s University. CJ loves cooking (but not cleaning), gardening, going to the beach, rocks, fossils, and FROGS! This will be her first year with Famous Adventures, where she’ll be leading the Nature Camp. She can’t wait to teach the littles, and maybe share a few moves.
Emily is a James Island Charter High School graduate, and is now a rising sophomore at the University of South Carolina, majoring in Early Childhood Education. She has been an AVID Tutor at Westwood High School, and enjoys working with students of all ages. She enjoys kayaking, swimming, yoga, and pretty much anything else that involves the great outdoors. She has experience babysitting, lifeguarding, assistant coaching for her summer swim team, and volunteering at summer camps. This will be her first summer with Famous Adventures!
Jessica Adams is finished up her first year of college, where she's seeking a teaching degree. She has worked for YMCA Camp Cherokee, attended two Outward Bound Trips, and volunteers at Charleston Area Therapeutic Riding. She interned with Brooke Haynie, the Outdoor Education Teacher at Charleston Collegiate. She is certified in Wilderness First Aid, CPR and AED. Jessica’s enthusiastic, loves the outdoors, and is always prepared with a pun! This is her fourth summer with us.
Kate is returning for her second summer at Famous Adventures! She grew up here in Charleston, and is earning her Early Childhood Education degree from USC Bluffton. An avid outdoorsperson, Kate is combining her skills to teach our campers about all of the highlights the Lowcountry offers! Ask her anything about being outdoors - she's done it all
Kim Copeland was born and raised in Summerville. She has a BS in Business from the CofC, a BA in Elementary Education and a Master's Degree in Education from Western Governors University. She is a 4th grade teacher at Orange Grove Charter School, and joins us for her third summer at camp. In her spare time, she absolutely loves being outdoors! Kayaking is one of her most favorite things, as well as camping and hiking, especially if waterfalls are involved! Kim has her WFA, CPR and Darkness to Light Certifications.
Lizzy loves to have fun and values experiential learning. This can be seen in her desire to bring joy and meaning everywhere she goes. She has a degree in Psychology and Outdoor Recreation and Education. She enjoys being outside and has experience in outdoor education, wilderness therapy, and adventure camps. This will be Lizzy’s first summer with us. Lizzy has previously been certified in WFA, and holds CPR and Darkness to Light Certifications.
This is Serena's third summer at Famous Adventures! She graduated from Academic Magnet, and just completed her first year at the University of Pittsburg. She loves all things math-related. Serena enjoys camping with her family and exploring the Lowcountry
