Instructors

Our staff:camper ratio is 2 staff to 13 campers

 

We're all adults here! There is one trip leader (21+) and one assistant (18+) in each group

Each staff also has:

  •  

  • Wilderness First Aid (WFA) certification for all Trip Leaders

  • Experience specifically working with children in the outdoors (see bios below!)

  • Darkness to Light training required for all staff

  • Background check 

  • Van driver training and DMV background check

Aaron Lipka

Aaron is a full-time Latin teacher at Porter-Gaud, and 4th-year Famous Adventures staff.  Aaron has an MA in Romance Languages from the University of Georgia.  He enjoys all things overly-cerebral, including speaking in dead languages and playing complicated board games.  Aaron has also participated in Outward Bound North Carolina and Hurricane Island, and is an avid whitewater rafter, mountain biker, and world-traveler.  Challenge him to a game of Super Silent Speed Ball!

Allison Philips

Allison is a camp and outdoor enthusiast, and will lead our Fall programs in 2021! Allison has a degree in Family and Child Sciences from FL State University, and she teaches preschool in Mt. Pleasant. She has years of experience working with kids as a teacher, camp counselor, and challenge course facilitator, and she is passionate about learning through play in the outdoors. Her talents include hula hooping while walking backwards and Harry Potter trivia.

Christine Black

Christine is an outdoor enthusiast who is ready to spend her second summer exploring the low country! For the past two years Christine has been a full time 4th grade teacher in Chattanooga, Tennessee. She has her MA in Elementary Education from Lipscomb University and BA in Early Childhood Education from the University of Connecticut.  Christine loves everything outdoors and is passionate about learning in nature. In her free time Christine loves reading, biking, camping and going for really long walks!

Jessica Adams

Jessica Adams has just graduated from Veritas high school. She has worked for YMCA Camp Cherokee, attended two Outward Bound Trips, and volunteers at Charleston Area Therapeutic Riding. She interned with Brooke Haynie, the Outdoor Education Teacher at Charleston Collegiate.  She is certified in Wilderness First Aid, CPR and AED. Jessica’s enthusiastic, loves the outdoors, and is always prepared with a pun!  This is her third summer with us.

Jonathan Laureano

Jonathan has been with Famous Adventures since our first summer!  A Porter-Gaud alum, Jonathan is a senior at the Citadel.  He has also completed multiple trips with North Carolina Outward Bound, including their Leadership Course.    Jonathan loves camping and backpacking, and is an amazing mentor for young kids.  He's known at camp as "Johann Noodle" or "panda in a human suit."  Jonathan has his WFA, CPR and Darkness to Light Certifications.

Kim Copeland

Kim Copeland was born and raised in Summerville. She has a BS in Business from the CofC, a BA in Elementary Education and a Master's Degree in Education from Western Governors University. She is a 4th grade teacher at Orange Grove Charter School, and joins us for her third summer at camp. In her spare time, she absolutely loves being outdoors!  Kayaking is one of her most favorite things, as well as camping and hiking, especially if waterfalls are involved!  Kim has her WFA, CPR and Darkness to Light Certifications.

Erin Stuck

Erin absolutely loves the outdoors and is excited to share and inspire that curiosity and appreciation in our campers! She graduated from California State University, Northridge with a Bachelor's degree in Elementary Education. She enjoys hiking, soccer, going to the beach, and baking treats.  She has CPR and Darkness to Light Certifications.

Kate Laban

Kate has been a caretaker for several Famous Adventures families before joining our staff full time!  She grew up here in Charleston, and is earning her Early Childhood Education degree from USC Bluffton.  An avid outdoorsperson, Kate is combining her skills to teach our campers about all of the highlights the Lowcountry offers!

Liz Lenhoff

Liz's talent is her deep understanding of all things natural - just ask her a biology question! We're so excited for Liz to join us for her second summer.  Liz grew up in Charleston going to summer camps.  She is passionate about getting kids outdoors and having fun.  She is certified in Wilderness First Aid, CPR and Darkness to Light. She loves kayaking in the summer and snow boarding in the winter.

Garrett Saylor

Garrett is a rising senior at The Citadel where he is majoring in Mechanical Engineering. He is big on outdoor adventures and loves to go backpacking. He’s trained in Wilderness First Aid, CPR and AED, and Darkness to Light.  Garrett is an Eagle Scout.  He recently hiked the entire Appalachian Trail in just 90 days!

Josh Judson

Josh just finished his junior year at The Citadel, where he is working towards a degree in Political Science. He is also a member of the National Guard and will be joining us late this summer, after his training. He can't wait to take part in our adventures and have a positive impact on the members at camp.

Serena Gainey

This is Serena's second summer at Famous Adventures!  She has just graduated from Academic Magnet, and is headed to the University of Pittsburg in the fall.  She loves all things math-related.  Serena enjoys camping with her family and exploring the Lowcountry

Alexis Smith

Alexis is a soon-to-be Clemson University graduate where she will complete her undergraduate degree in Biological Sciences with a minor in Wildlife Biology. She loves to teach about all types of animals and anything science related. Alexis also enjoys all kinds of outdoor activities including zip lining, hiking, scuba diving, but her favorite activity she has done is free diving  with sharks! She has training in WFA, CPR, and Darkness to Light.
